Time is Running Out to Submit Your Nominations for the 19th Annual Wilmington Awards and Access Wilmington Awards; Deadline Extended to Friday, August 16th

The City of Wilmington is still soliciting nominations for two separate and distinct awards programs for 2024—the 19th Annual Wilmington Awards and the Access Wilmington Awards. Both programs honor citizens for their outstanding service to individuals, the community, and the City as a whole. Nomination forms for the awards programs may be downloaded or completed online hereThe deadline for nominations has been extended to Friday, August 16, 2024. The awards ceremony will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, in the Louis L. Redding City/County Building, Council Chambers located at 800 North French Street.
 
The Wilmington Awards recognizes outstanding accomplishments of distinguished Wilmington citizens and/or citizens who serve Wilmington, excelling in the fields of the arts, athletics, business, education, environment, and health or science.  It also recognizes individuals for their community service, heroism, contributions to the faith community, and dedication to the cause of human and civil rights.  Senior citizens will also be recognized for their life-long accomplishments in one or more of the categories.
Wilmington Awards eligibility is based on one or more of the following criteria:

  • Leadership in community-building
  • Advocacy for educational excellence
  • Selfless act of courage and superior act of bravery
  • Furthering economic opportunity
  • Promotion of social justice
  • Advancing cultural awareness
  • Involvement with music and the arts to promote greater understanding and acceptance
  • Previous award recipients between 2010-2018 are ineligible 

Also, as part of the Wilmington Awards, the Thomas L. Cottingham Good Samaritan Award will be given to a person who has exhibited a selfless act of courage and humanity as was performed by the late Thomas Cottingham, for whom the award is named.

Access Wilmington Awards recognize individuals in Wilmington who are going above and beyond to open doors and create opportunities for people living with disabilities and their families. The program recognizes individuals in the categories of accessibility to the arts, accessibility to resources, community involvement, and employment/business ownership by and for the disabled.
