DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Directs traffic at intersections in the vicinity of public and parochial schools, both elementary and high schools, and public parks. Additional responsibilities include:
- Controls traffic by hand or with traffic lights at designated crossings to allow children to cross safely.
- Determines movement of traffic when traffic signals are not controlling or functioning.
- Remains alert to prevent children from attempting to cross the street when traffic is moving.
- Must be prepared to act quickly and objectively in emergencies.
- Must be able to maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors, children, parents, and the public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school or GED equivalency.
- Knowledge: Knowledge of traffic regulation
- Skills: Must be able to get to assigned school location on time. Standing is required for all shifts which many last up to four (4) hours.
- Abilities: Ability to learn applicable departmental rules and regulations. Ability and willingness to work in inclement weather throughout the year. Ability to see and hear traffic, children, the public, and any obstructions.
- Licenses: Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
CANDIDATE EVALUATION
Evaluation for this position includes a review of the applicant materials, certification of qualified applicants, and a panel interview.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
All selected applicants must pass a criminal background investigation, drug testing and pre-employment physical.
- Ability and willingness to work in inclement weather throughout the year.
- Standing is required for all shifts which many last up to four (4) hours.
- Ability to see and hear traffic, children, the public, and any obstructions.
- Schedule: This is a year-round, part-time position with two (2) shifts per day one 4-hour shift in the morning and one 3-hour shift afternoon.
TOTAL COMPENSATION
Compensation encompasses both salary administration and a comprehensive benefit package:
- Salary Administration: New employees are hired at the starting and up to median salary based on qualifications and internal equity. Annual merit increases are provided based on a satisfactory performance review.
- Benefits: Limited services positions are temporary as such not eligible for most benefits.
