PRIMARY FUNCTION

  • Assist the supervisor in coordinating and training small crews of employees in performing routine and repetitive duties.
  • Performs semi-skilled work in the operation of standard trucks, garbage truck, dump trucks, crew cab pickup trucks, tractors, riding lawn mowers, push mowers, and other tree excavation equipment.
  • Continuous, safe, and efficient operations of automotive, construction equipment in performing such tasks as transporting workers, and materials to and from job sites.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operates pickups, dump trucks, stake body, garbage trucks, skid steerer, flusher trucks with endorsement, or platform trucks in hauling sand, gravel, respond to special complaints relating to unmarked hazardous materials, dead animals, poison ivy, bed bugs and similar items as part of the duties.
  • for Public Works projects. Could possibly operate mechanical sweepers with the proper training. May operate various truck for spreading cinders or salt, utilizing a truck plowing, and clearing the streets of snow, or solid waste, also applying brine to City Streets.
  • Work may also involve exercising supervisory control over a small group of unskilled workers and may require overtime for special events.
  • Washes and performs preventive maintenance on assigned vehicles.  Performs all related work as required by the supervisor.
  • Possess and maintain a valid “CDL” Class “B” driver’s license with an active medical examiner’s certificate, a good driving record, and ability to pass drug screening as mandated by the Federal Department of Transportation for CDL drivers; tanker endorsement preferred.
  • Must be able to work overtime as needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduation from a high school or GED with experience in the operation of complex construction and maintenance equipment; mechanical sweeper; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic laws involved in the operation of automotive equipment and construction related vehicles. Knowledge of City Street layout.
  • Ability to operate automotive and related construction equipment safely and efficiently. Ability to detect operating defects in automotive equipment. Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time. Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge and experience in supervising small work crews.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Regularly works in outside weather conditions.  Works in inclement weather.  Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.  Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.  
  • Occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. 
  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. Occasionally required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell. Specific vision required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Must pass a criminal background investigation, pre-employment physical and drug test.

Sick Leave: Accumulates at the rate of one day for each completed month of service, beginning after the first full month of employment.

Vacation: At least eight (8) hours* of vacation per month after the completion of the first six (6) months* of continuous employment until the next January 1. Each January 1 thereafter, employee will be credited with at least ninety-six (96) hours* of vacation for the calendar year, until the completion of five (5) years of continuous service.

Holiday: Eligible employees receive holiday pay from date of hire, View City Holidays

Life Insurance: The City agrees to provide term life insurance for each eligible employee for a maximum of fifty thousand dollars ($50,000.00) at no cost.

Pension: Eligible employees are able to participate in the State Pension Plan you will contribute 6% of your bi-weekly base pay.

Deferred Compensation Plan: Optional employee contributory plan available.

Live Near Your Work Program: Homebuyer Assistance program to provide up to $4,000 in homebuyers assistance for newly hired employees, first time homebuyers, and those employees choosing to purchase a residence in one of the City’s unique and culture-blended neighborhoods.
