PRIMARY FUNCTION

  • Performs routine garbage and refuse task collection duties; works snow detail as needed and determined by management.
  • Work is usually performed under the direct supervision of the Assistant Sanitation Supervisor who issues general orders on routine jobs and specific instructions when departures are made from established procedures.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs difficult and heavy manual labor in connection with general sanitation duties, i.e., picking up garbage and refuse and loading it into the truck. Operates compactor or packer-type refuse trucks, which collect garbage, rubbish, and refuse. Installs and removes skid chains as needed.  Operation of snow removal equipment as needed.
  • Work occasionally requires the performance of tasks requiring the use of hand tools.  Performs all related work as required.
  • Possess and maintain a valid "CDL" Class “B” driver's license with an active medical examiner’s certificate, a good driving record, and ability to pass drug screening mandated by Federal Department of Transportation for CDL drivers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduation from high school or a GED equivalency; good knowledge of the safe and efficient operation of moderately complex heavy equipment such as trucks; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Ability to detect operating defects in the equipment and to perform daily preventive maintenance duties.
  • Some experience in performing difficult and heavy manual labor in connection with general sanitation duties (i.e., picking up solid waste and refuse and loading it into trucks).
  • Knowledge and ability to perform semi-skilled and skilled manual tasks without close supervision.
  • Ability to lift or move heavy objects weighing up to 100 lbs. over extended periods of time.
  • Ability to walk for a prolong period of time and distances in hot and cold weather.
  • Possess good customer service skills and the ability to deal with the general public. Ability to understand oral and written instructions.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.
  • Frequently works in places highly precarious and is exposed to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  • Regularly required to reach with hands and arms. Frequently is required to stand, walk, and use hands, operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and talk or hear.

Must pass a criminal background investigation, pre-employment physical, and drug test.

Sick Leave: Accumulates at the rate of one day for each completed month of service, beginning after the first full month of employment.

Vacation: At least eight (8) hours* of vacation per month after the completion of the first six (6) months* of continuous employment until the next January 1. Each January 1 thereafter, employee will be credited with at least ninety-six (96) hours* of vacation for the calendar year, until the completion of five (5) years of continuous service.

Holiday: Eligible employees receive holiday pay from date of hire, View City Holidays

Life Insurance: The City agrees to provide term life insurance for each eligible employee for a maximum of fifty thousand dollars ($50,000.00) at no cost.

Pension: Eligible employees are able to participate in the State Pension Plan you will contribute 6% of your bi-weekly base pay.

Deferred Compensation Plan: Optional employee contributory plan available.

Live Near Your Work Program: Homebuyer Assistance program to provide up to $4,000 in homebuyers assistance for newly hired employees, first time homebuyers, and those employees choosing to purchase a residence in one of the City’s unique and culture-blended neighborhoods.

Tuition Reimbursement: The City encourages employee self-development and continuing education and provides a reimbursement program for eligible employees annually for qualified college or certification courses taken that year.
