The City of Wilmington’s Fall Leaf and Yard Waste Collection Program begins October 29. Each weekday through Friday, December 14 (excluding holidays) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., crews from the Department of Public Works will vacuum leaves that are raked onto the street over the curb line. City crews will vacuum leaves on a seven-week schedule that covers the entire City and moves from areas with the most dense tree canopy to the least dense. Residents can download the complete leaf-collection schedule by visiting www.WilmingtonDE.gov/residents/leafandyardwaste.
Citizens must collect yard waste (materials other than leaves) in special recyclable paper bags that are available FREE at three locations in the City or which can be purchased at local home improvement or hardware stores. The bags should be placed at the curb on regularly scheduled recycling collection days. Recyclables are collected in areas of the City east of Interstate 95 on Mondays and in areas west of I-95 on Tuesdays.
FREE bags are available at the Mayor’s Office of Constituent Services on the 3rd Floor of the Redding City/County Building, 800 North French Street; the City’s Turner Municipal Complex at 500 Wilmington Avenue, or the Delaware Center for Horticulture at 1810 North DuPont Street.
Wilmington, a regional leader in curbside recycling, began five years ago to recycle and compost all collected leaves and yard waste at a site on East 12th Street instead of depositing the material in the local landfill. The composted leaves and yard waste material is used each spring to beautify City parks and open spaces.
The schedule for the vacuuming of leaves through December 14 is as follows:
-
October 29 through November 21:
Market Street to Miller Road, Brandywine Creek to Rockwood Road -
November 5 through November 16:
Prices Run, Riverside, East Side and South Wilmington -
November 22 through December 7:
South Park Drive to Hedgeville, Union Street to City Line -
November 26 through December 14:
Washington Street to Union Street and Lancaster Avenue to Pennsylvania Avenue; Midtown Brandywine and Browntown - After December 14, citizens must bag all leaves and yard waste and place the material at the curb on regularly scheduled recycling collection days.
A map illustrating the fall leaf and yard waste collection schedule is available on the City of Wilmington’s website at www.WilmingtonDE.gov/residents/leafandyardwaste. Copies can also be obtained by calling the Mayor’s Office of Constituent Services at (302) 576-2489.
Neighborhood and community associations are encouraged to coordinate community or neighborhood clean-up events with the City’s fall leaf and yard waste collection schedule.
Wilmington City Code prevents the City from providing yard waste removal service to private trash/yard waste contractors. The City will not collect leaves or yard waste place at the curb or in the street by private collectors. Residents using those services are asked to ensure that yard waste collected from their residence is disposed of properly.
