The “Invasion of the Fringe Wilmington Festival” is officially underway!

Tickets are now on sale for the 2012 Fringe Wilmington Festival—Delaware’s five-day celebration of unconventional and experimental art. Now in its fourth year, Fringe Wilmington returns to the streets of Downtown Wilmington September 26 through September 30, 2012.

The 2012 festival lives up to its billing as the “Invasion of the Fringe Wilmington Festival” with over 200 local, regional, and national artists descending upon the streets of Downtown Wilmington to present out-of-this-world art in all of the major arts disciplines: visual, performance, and cinema. Audiences can choose from nearly 70 individual performances at 14 different venues along Market Street. Participating artists will invade a wide variety of venues, ranging from traditional theaters to vacant store fronts.

“The Fringe Wilmington Festival is clearly not your typical arts festival,” explains Tina Betz, Co-Director of the Fringe Wilmington Festival. “From the wildly varying venues to the wide range of innovative performances and visual art, everything about this event will challenge your perceptions of art.”

“The fringe festival spirit is about taking risks, and our independent artist selection committee has assembled an impressive list of innovative, thought-provoking performances that will delight festival-goers. We specialize in art and performance that might otherwise not be seen in Delaware. And while our primary goal is to connect adventurous audiences with adventurous art, we are confident that the festival offers something for every taste.”

All single tickets to Fringe Wilmington performances are $5.00. Single tickets may be purchased online (www.FringeWilmingtonDE.com) until September 25; at Festival Headquarters (314 N. Market Street) during the Festival; or at the venue door (unless sold out). Individual tickets may be picked up at Festival Headquarters (314 N. Market Street) up until an hour before show time, after which time they will be available at their respective venue.

Festival patrons can also purchase an all-access pass for $25.00. An all-access pass entitles the bearer to one admission per performance based upon available seating. The pass does not guarantee a reserved seat; all seats are first-come, first-served. Shows might sell out, so all-access pass holders are urged to arrive early to their desired performances. All access passes must be picked up at Festival Headquarters (314 N. Market Street) beginning September 26.

100 percent of every ticket purchased for a Fringe Wilmington Festival performance goes directly to the artist who created that show.

In addition to single tickets or an all-access pass, everyone attending the 2012 Fringe Wilmington Festival must purchase a $5.00 admission button, which must be worn to all performances. Buttons will be sold at Fringe Headquarters (314 N. Market Street) as well as each venue prior to the performance. This one-time purchase helps support the festival.

The Fringe Wilmington Festival is made possible by support from festival sponsors, including Delaware Division of the Arts, Zygote Sponsor Spark Weekly, and Mobius New Media.

The Films of the Fringe Wilmington Extreme Filmmaking Competition

The Fringe Wilmington Extreme Filmmaking Competition challenged 22 teams of filmmaker to create a five-minute or less film within 9 days from September 7 to September 16. Filmmakers were permitted to create a film of any genre (e.g. comedy, horror, drama, mystery, etc.), but had to include randomly selected mystery props, themes, and a pre-recorded (and totally bizarre) video clip. Filmmakers are competing for nearly $4,000 in cash prizes, including a top prize of $1,000, which will be presented the final day of the festival.

All films from the competition will be screened at Theatre N at Nemours on Saturday, September 29 beginning at 2:00 p.m. Audience members will vote for who should win the coveted “Audience Choice” award. Prizes will be awarded during the final evening of Fringe Wilmington on September 30 following an encore screening of the top 10 films at Theatre N beginning at 5:30 p.m.
