Wilmington City Council President Norman D. Griffiths today announced the appointment of the Council Members who will serve on the special committee responsible for recommending a candidate to fill the vacant 8th District seat. The Ad Hoc Selection Committee, a special committee of City Council appointed and chaired by the President consists of Council Members Kevin F. Kelley, Sr., Charles Potter, Jr., Samuel Prado, and Loretta Walsh.

The process for filling a vacancy on City Council is formally outlined in City Code Section 2-34. The five member committee will make a recommendation to the full Council for consideration via a Council resolution, with a majority vote required for adoption. President Griffiths said that the Committee wants to make its recommendation to Council expeditiously, so that the residents of the 8th District would not be without representation for an extended period of time.

The deadline for accepting letters of interest and resumes from interested parties is Monday, June 18, 2012. Additionally, recommendations from members of Council shall also be due June 18, 2012. As outlined in City Charter Section 2-101, the new member shall come from the same councilmanic district and be of the same political party, in this instance Democrat, as the councilmember whose office has become vacant.
